Open Education
Open education is a collective term which describes institutional practices and program initiatives that give greater access to the learning and training traditionally offered through formal education systems. It can mean sharing in the following ways:
- scholarly research (open access)
- teaching and learning materials (open educational resources)
- tools or computer code (open source)
- access to some classes (open courses)
Open educational resources are resources that are openly licenced, with permissions to reuse, retain, revise, remix and/or redistribute.
The purpose of open education is to eliminate barriers that can preclude both opportunities and recognition for participation in institution-based learning. Open education is built on the belief that everyone should have the freedom to use, customize, improve and redistribute educational materials without constraint
